Jay’s Way

California Magpies

Blue magpies
Converge on telephone lines
Perhaps some prefer them over Jeffrey Pines
They sing through their distinct yellow bills
Happily until
One swift fall
Alarms all
Panicked caws ring out
Crows circle the corpse on ground and shout
Singing their grief til end of funeral brings
Iridescent feathered wings
Back to skies
